A good online Unit Converter cuts through all of that in seconds — but only if you know which conversions actually matter for fitness and how to use the tool without second-guessing yourself.

Finding the Right Category Before You Start

The most common mistake is opening the converter and picking the wrong category. A Unit Converter typically organises its options into groups like Length, Mass/Weight, Energy, Temperature, Speed, and Volume. For fitness use, you'll bounce between Mass (bodyweight, dumbbells, barbell plates), Energy (calories vs. kilojoules on food labels), Length (height, running distance), and occasionally Volume (fluid intake, supplement serving sizes).

Start by clicking or selecting the category that matches what you're converting — not the closest-sounding one. Energy and Power are different categories. Mass and Force are different. A calorie is a unit of energy, so if you're converting kcal to kJ, go to Energy, not Nutrition (some converters have a Nutrition sub-section, but if yours doesn't, Energy is correct).

Step 1 — Converting Your Bodyweight Between kg and lbs

This is the single most-used conversion in fitness, whether you're tracking macros on a US-based app that asks for your weight in pounds, or reading a strength standard chart written in kilograms.

  2. In the "From" field, choose Kilograms (kg).
  3. In the "To" field, choose Pounds (lb).
  4. Type your weight. Say you weigh 78 kg — the converter instantly returns 171.96 lb.

Why does this matter beyond a simple app input? When calculating protein targets (the common recommendation is around 0.7–1 g per pound of bodyweight), working in the wrong unit doubles or halves your target. At 78 kg, your protein floor in grams is roughly 78 × 1.6 = 125 g per day using a kg-based formula, or 171 × 0.75 ≈ 128 g using a lbs-based formula. Close, but if you mistakenly typed 78 into a lbs field, you'd get a target designed for a 35 kg person.

Step 2 — Decoding Kilojoules on Food Labels

Australian, European, and many Asian nutrition labels show energy in kilojoules (kJ) rather than kilocalories (kcal — what most people call "calories"). A protein bar label might read 1,050 kJ per serving, and if you're logging into MyFitnessPal in kcal, that number is useless raw.

  1. Select Energy from the category list.
  2. "From" = Kilojoule (kJ), "To" = Kilocalorie (kcal).
  3. Enter 1050.
  4. Result: 250.9 kcal — which you can log directly.

The rough mental shortcut is dividing kJ by 4.184, but the converter is exact and faster. This also works in reverse — if a US recipe tool shows 340 kcal and you want to verify against a kJ-labelled ingredient, flip the fields and convert back.

Step 3 — Converting Running Distance (km to miles and back)

Most GPS watches and running apps let you toggle units, but race distances, training plans, and treadmill displays don't always cooperate. A 10K race is exactly 10 kilometres — but if your treadmill only shows miles, you need to know when to stop.

  1. Select Length.
  2. "From" = Kilometre (km), "To" = Mile (mi).
  3. Enter 10. Result: 6.214 miles.

For a half-marathon (21.0975 km), the converter gives you 13.109 miles — so you'd set your treadmill target at 13.11 miles. For a marathon, 42.195 km = 26.219 miles, which is why you always hear "26.2."

Pace conversion is a separate calculation (the converter won't do min/km to min/mile directly since pace is a ratio), but if you know your pace in min/km, you can convert the distance component: 1 km = 0.6214 miles, so a 5:30/km pace becomes 5:30 ÷ 0.6214 = approximately 8:51/mile.

Step 4 — Plate Math: Converting Barbell Weight Plates

If you train at a gym in Europe or Asia, plates are in kg. If you follow a US powerlifting program, working sets are written in lb. The Unit Converter handles this cleanly — and it's especially useful for non-round conversions.

  • A 45 lb plate (the standard US barbell plate) = 20.41 kg — not exactly 20 kg, which matters when the program says "add 5 lb" and you're working with kg increments.

Run these through the Mass converter the same way as bodyweight — same fields, just different numbers.

Step 5 — Daily Water Intake (Litres, Fluid Ounces, Cups)

Hydration recommendations are written in whichever unit the author prefers — sometimes litres, sometimes fluid ounces, sometimes "cups." Eight cups a day is the old standard; in metric that's about 1.89 litres.

  1. Select Volume.
  2. "From" = US Cup, "To" = Litre.
  3. Enter 8. Result: 1.893 L.

If a sports nutrition brand says mix one scoop per 8 fluid ounces (fl oz), and your shaker is marked in mL:

Step 6 — Body Temperature When You're Sick Mid-Training Block

Less obvious but genuinely useful: if you train while travelling and a local clinic gives your temperature in Celsius while your home protocol says "don't train above 99.5°F," you need a quick check.

  2. "From" = Celsius (°C), "To" = Fahrenheit (°F).
  3. Enter 37.5. Result: 99.5°F — exactly the threshold. At 38°C (100.4°F), training is off the table.

Getting Accurate Results Every Time

A few things that cause errors in practice:

  • Fluid ounces vs. dry ounces: The converter usually distinguishes between volume (fl oz) and mass (oz). Protein powder is measured by mass in oz, not volume. Always check which ounce you've selected.
  • UK vs. US measurements: A UK fluid ounce (28.41 mL) is not the same as a US fluid ounce (29.57 mL). Some converters have both listed — pick the right one based on where the recipe or product comes from.
  • Rounding: The converter often shows several decimal places. For practical gym use, round to one decimal (102.1 kg). For calorie tracking, round to the nearest whole number.
